Exercise is Hard

Motivations 2Exercise is hard.

That may not sound like a shocking thing to say, but if you are going to exercise at any health level, it should always be hard. If it isn’t hard, are you really exercising? The point of the entire process is to push your body so that your heart keeps pumping at a higher rate and you burn calories or burn muscle. That’s the point regardless of where your health is.

Pushing Through the Pain

Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it should be unbearably hard. There are typically about 3 or 4 times in every workout I do that makes me want to stop and say I’ve done enough. That’s normally the best time to take a quick break and see if you can recover and go back to it. If you are still struggling just as bad as you were before you take your break, that may mean you have over exerted yourself and you need to stop. If it is a little bit easier, keep going. Your mind is going to try to quit before your body is. You have to overcome your mental exhaustion repeatedly when exercising. Push through the pain, it will be well worth it.

Know Your Limitations

It’s one thing to push through the pain, it’s a completely different thing to push yourself so hard that you do something that can be seriously detrimental to your health. Don’t play around with injuries. If you have one, modify any exercise that tests it. If your body has been through tons of turmoil, pace yourself and see how much you can take. Not every person is capable of doing the same type of exercise, so figure out what you can and can’t do.Motivations 1

Cut Yourself Some Slack

You’ll have good days, you’ll have bad days. You’ll have days where you just can’t get anything done. When it happens, just vow to try again the next day. The mental side of exercise is one of the biggest challenges that people face when trying to get into a consistent exercise routine. If you miss a day, you might be inclined to beat yourself up over it. Then discouragement starts to set in, and you get in danger of stopping altogether. There’s nothing you can do about the past, so just focus on your overall goal and strive to achieve that.

Motivations 3Exercise is meant to be hard, and it’s easy to lose sight of that. Just because you are struggling through a workout doesn’t mean you need to give up or you aren’t doing it right. It means you need to keep trying to get better. You’ll be glad you did.
